Help Support Lexington House
Lexington House is a community of recovery, hope, and dignity that empowers people with a history of mental illness through friendship, meaningful work, and cultivating strengths. Clubhouses are membership-based communities where people living with a history of mental illness come to rebuild their lives. From the movement's origin in 1948, Clubhouses are in more than 300 communities worldwide including 12 within Indiana. Clubhouses provide members with a proven approach to rehabilitation, recovery, and integration into the community. By establishing a Clubhouse in Elkhart, we have created a community center where people with a history of mental illness can participate in valuable work experience and human interaction, as well as gain access to dignified housing and employment opportunities in the community. To be a member of Clubhouse, a person needs to have a history of mental illness and be over the age of 18. It is projected that approximately 110 adults in our community with a history of mental illness will attend Lexington House in 2021 with an average daily attendance of 20 members. Lexington House has grown from a working group that began in 2018. In January of 2020, a steering committee formed with members who work in the following agencies: United Way, Faith Mission, Beacon Health, Elkhart Housing Authority, Heart City Health, City of Elkhart Police, Elkhart City Homeless Coalition, Elkhart County Superior Court, National Alliance on Mental Health, Guidance Ministries, and Oaklawn Psychiatric Center. From this committee, a Board of Directors was chosen, and we incorporated in July 2020. Cora Dale House formally Elkhart County Clubhouse, is in strong support of the development of a sister Clubhouse in Elkhart. They are currently the fiscal sponsor for Lexington House pending our 501(c)(3) approval. In early Fall of this year, Lexington House received support from River of Life Community Church in the form of space for Lexington House at their site on Prairie Street.
